George mason patriot’s men’s basketball program has a good history right behind it. Since mason was founded in the year 1957, basketball and athletics have had such a huge impact on George. All the popularity he has had over the years has originated from the basketball and athletics. During the tournament, men have advanced to the NCAA tournament for five good times. That was in the year 1989, 1999, 2001, 2006 and also 2008. This was also in the NIT tournament which took place for three times and they won. The team is widely known for the 2006 where mason hit North Carolina, Connecticut and also Michigan State Together With Wichita. But then they later came to loose to Florida and too bad, Florida came to win to the finals. Florida became the champions of the Nation Champion.The coach Larrinaga was offered a huge offer by providence of $4.25 million to leave mason for five years. But then, he later came to announce his decision in the year 2008 as he declined the offer from Providence College. He is to be with mason for the next few years till 2015.

Women are also a part of the mason basketball. There was received news that Debbie Taneyhill had decided to resign which was in the year 2008. She did that to get to other opportunities Debbie had spent 11 seasons with the George mason women basketball as the head coach which was pretty successful. During the period that Taneyhill was coaching the team, the women basketball went through four straight winnings from 2000 to 2004.
They were also led to two post season appearance in the women National Invitation Tournament in 2001 and also 2004. Debbie was the 6th coach in the 33 year history of mason. She has led the george mason basketball in women to having a lot of wins that exceeds 10 times.
